Mission and Outreach is a vital part of life at First Lutheran Church. Many opportunities are available to choose from, both locally and globally.
ELCA Malaria Campaign
The ELCA is taking part in a world-wide effort to eradicate malaria from sub-Saharan Africa by 2015. Every 60 seconds, a child in Africa dies of malaria, but just $10 can buy a bed net, which can save a life. Our Mission Possible Board has set a goal for First Lutheran to raise $9,500 to buy bed nets. Join us in raising money to treat and prevent this curable disease!
Fair Trade Coffee
Good Coffee for a Good Cause – Stop by the Mission/Recycle Center located in the West entry near the Family Room to purchase your Equal Exchange/Fair Trade Coffee, Tea, Nuts and Chocolate Bars. The Mission Committee sells these items between services the first and third Sunday of each month. By purchasing Equal Exchange coffee we help support the coffee growers in South America and a variety of other mission outreaches. Coffee is $7.00 per bag and tea is $4.00.
Feed My Sheep
The Feed My Sheep group, at First Lutheran, is a ministry of the Mission Outreach Board. Our work is to offer support for individuals and families experiencing hunger. 1 in 5 Minnesota families, with children, face hunger or food insecurity every day. We believe God seeks those who:
- are sensitive to the needs of His children and He asks them to … Feed My Sheep.
- know that the Christian walk is sometimes a tough path and He asks them to help one another to …Feed My Sheep.
Hunger and Food Insecurity Exists in our Community. Your monetary gifts and memorials are appreciated and your volunteer participation is always welcome. If you would like more information about the Feed My Sheep or wish to be involved in this ministry please contact the church office or Kathy Haug Phone: 320-762-2140
FLC Community Garden
Located on the church land off of County Rd 46, the garden is planted each spring with potatoes and other vegetables that are harvested and given to the United Way to disperse to the needy families in the Alexandria area. Many willing hands are needed to plant in the spring, weed throughout the summer, and harvest in the fall.
It is the tradition of First Lutheran to support the Douglas County Outreach Food Shelf in the month of March. Donations during March are appreciated by Minnesota Food Share which means our local food shelf receives a percentage of state donations based on the amount of money we raise locally. Though food donations are always needed, monetary donations are by far the “best value.” To make a financial donation simply write your check to First Lutheran with “food shelf” in the memo line. You may bring your check to the church office or put it in the offering plate during worship.
Habitat for Humanity
Members and friends of First Lutheran are proud long-time supporters and partners of Habitat for Humanity in Douglas County. Through monetary donations, participation in the Women Build, Thrivent Builds, or donating your time and talents in some other way, there are numerous opportunities to support HFH through our congregation.
Lutheran World Relief
On a regular basis, we ship quilts and kits for Lutheran World Relief. Items that are particularly needed include baby sweaters, sweatshirts sizes 0-2, Ivory bar soap, bath and hand towels, receiving blankets, baby socks, and diapers. Donations can be placed in the basket near the Welcome Center. Each fall, school supplies are collected to put together school kits for children in need. Please watch for the collection bins for these items.
Operation Bootstrap Africa
First Lutheran has been a partner with OBA for almost 30 years! Operation Bootstrap Africa is a grass-roots non-profit that partners with communities in Tanzania and Madagascar to help educate their children. Grounded in a “self-help” philosophy, Bootstrap works in partnership with local groups, uses local resources and follows local priorities to improve the education of Africa’s children. Please consider walking or sponsoring a walker for this year’s walk!
Operation Christmas Child
Over 150 plastic shoeboxes are filled with toys and supplies for children in other countries who don’t receive Christmas gifts. The KICK and FLY programs at First Lutheran help by decorating and filling some of the boxes; congregation members are encouraged to fill the other boxes for shipment in early November.
Other Missions we are involved with at a local or global level include:
- Elder Network
- United Way
- Caring Hands Dental Clinic
- Love, Inc.
- Someplace Safe
