• Groups of 6 — 8 people meet to share a meal and fellowship approx. one time a quarter.

CREATIVE ARTS/MUSIC TEAM

Play the handbells and handchimes. All skill levels welcome from beginner to advanced (should be able to read music). Weekly practices Mondays at 5:30pm, September — May. Perform during worship one weekend a month September — May.

Create and display banners throughout the building by seasons of the church

This group practices weekly on Thursdays at 6:45pm in the Fellowship Hall.

All singers (9th grade through adult) are invited to join. Weekly practices September — May on Wednesdays at 6:30pm. Sing during 8:30 & 9:45am worship services approximately two Sundays a month September — May

Christmas Program Helper – Contact: Randi Rach, Director of Children’s Ministry 320-762-2196
Duties include coordinating and/or stuffing treat bags for kids, making props and/or scenery, coordinating and or/serving snacks during Saturday rehearsals, assisting with costumes, working with acting speaking parts to rehearse lines and cue movements. Will help with rehearsals and program weekends in early December.

Decorate the church, inside & out, for festivals and seasons.
Commitment: Approximately 2 hours per holiday season

“Perform” in productions (examples: Living Nativity – the story of the birth of the Christ Child re-enacted for the community, Maundy Thursday re-enactment of the Last Supper, Puppet Ministry, Skits during Lent or other worship services, etc.)
Commitment: As needed & available (Living Nativity is one weekend in early December). Contact: Varies depending on the performance.

• Knit/ Crochet/Sew baby blankets to be given as gifts for baptisms or to hospitalized children.
• Embroider crosses on the baptismal cloths given to families at the time of baptism.

Lead Art for VBS (Vacation Bible School) – Contact: Randi Rach, Director of Children’s Ministry 320-762-2196
Coordinate and lead the Arts/Crafts portion of the day. Planning meeting for projects and supplies.
Commitment: One week in early June (Mon — Fri, 9am — noon).

Lead Music for VBS (Vacation Bible School) – Contact: Randi Rach, Director of Children’s Ministry 320-762-2196
Duties include but not limited to: Review and select music to teach for preschool or K-5 VBS weeks, select actions to go with songs, lead/teach songs and actions to VBS students, lead songs for the VBS program on Friday during VBS weeks.
Commitment: Preparation and practice needed to learn and prepare to lead music in addition to mornings during VBS week (early June, Mon — Fri, 9am — noon)

Your time and talents are needed to rip, cut, sew, pin, or tie in quilt-making. Material and supplies provided. Join this ambitious group when you can for part of the day or all day. Meetings are every third Tuesday from 8am – noon; come when you can.

Some examples of how your gifts can be used:
• Provide music for worship at Carlos State Park (Sundays) as often as you like (Memorial Day to Labor Day) Provide Special Music during worship or various events throughout the year. Organ – we could use you to fill in when Randy is unable to be in worship. Piano – fill in at worship, lead Kingdom Kids Sunday School, KICK (Kids in Christ’s Kingdom), VBS (Vacation Bible School), Christmas Program, WELCA Luncheons, etc.

Many projects are available for the experienced seamstress. We have needs for helpers with costumes for the Christmas Program, Maundy Thursday Disciples, Living Nativity, etc. Altar cloths and Banners. Miscellaneous projects as they come up.

Children love to sing, dance and make a joyful noise. The goal is to send them home with a song in their hearts.
Opportunities include: Kingdom Kids Sunday School, Kids in Christ’s Kingdom (KICK) Wednesday School, VBS (Vacation Bible School), Christmas Program.
Commitment for any of the following: Kingdom Kids: 8:30, 9:45 or 11am Sunday mornings, and Wednesdays at 5:15pm September— May. KICK: 3:30 — 4:50pm Wednesday afternoons September — May, VBS: 9am — noon, 2 weeks in early June. Kids’ Choir meets Wednesdays 4:45 — 5:30pm September – May.

HOSPITALITY/WORSHIP TEAM

• Organize the events of the church which require the use of the kitchen: funerals, annual meeting, Wednesday evening meals, etc.
• Order & pick up the food, call for cakes/bars for funerals, and call workers to help serve at funerals
• Clean the kitchen at the end of the month.
• Assign the workers to do the table set-up, make coffee, cut cakes/bars, prepare food, replenish the buffet table as needed, refill coffee pots, and all clean-up.
• Wash the tablecloths, dish towels, and dish clothes, and return them in a timely manner.
Commitment: 1 or 2 months per year

• Communion preparation for monthly service. Call committee members and schedule help for the month/ Dust altar furniture, change paraments, clean candlesticks & chalice, iron the Fair linen,
• Set communion on the altar for a worship service. Clean up communion if you are the last service. Commitment: one-two months of the year.

Smile and greet people while serving coffee, lemonade, cookies and/or doughnuts for those gathering before or after worship.
• Church – needed before and after Saturday night worship, and after the 8:30 & 9:45am worship services on Sunday. The Saturday night Host picks up the bakery order at Cub.
• City Park – pick up the coffee & water from Caribou North, transport & set up at the Park. Commitment: 11am worship Sundays Memorial Day — Labor Day

Help distribute the wafers and wine during the 1st & 3rd Sundays each month OR any Saturday where there isn’t Sunday communion or at Wednesday night worship. 2 assistants for Sunday services, 3 assistants for Saturday service, 3 assistants for Wednesday night. (This is a great opportunity to serve as a family)

There are a couple different serving opportunities on Sunday morning:

  • Haul the equipment from church to City Park and back (should fit in your vehicle)
  • Drive the church van (equipment already loaded) from church to Carlos State Park and back.
  • Set up & take down all equipment for the service (keyboards, speakers, etc).
    Commitment: once or twice per season (Memorial Weekend — Labor Day Weekend)

Greeter Host — Contact: Steve Heseltine, Shared Ministry Coordinator 320-762-2196

  • Welcome people as they enter First Lutheran, offer a smile of encouragement, offer a hand of friendliness, and let them know “we’re glad you’re here!”
  • Greeters are often times the 1st impression visitors have of First Lutheran. And are needed at the East and West entry doors before all worship services.

Leader/Speaker at Lake Carlos State Park (LCSP) – Contact: Pete Pfeffer, Chair LCSP Planning Team 320-491-8912
Lead worship and provide the faith talk for the vacationers, the community, and members of First Lutheran Church worshipping at Lake Carlos State Park. Base your faith talk on one of the texts for the day or choose one of your favorite scriptures.

  • The faith talk should be short and from the heart. Let Christ be the focus.
  • Choose the hymns along with the keyboard player.
    Commitment: as you choose.

Mini Bus Driver- Contact: Steve Heseltine, Shared Ministry Coordinator 320-762-2196
There are many needs for a driver. Must have a Medical Card (church willing to pay)

  • Pick folks up from senior housing facilities & bring them to and from worship using a 12-passenger “rainbow rider” type bus. Needed for Sundays for 9:45am worship.
    Commitment: approx. once every 6 or 7 weeks.
  • Transport elementary school age children from church to various spots about town during field trips for KICK (Kids in Christ’s Kingdom) Various Wednesday afternoons September — May.
    Commitment: as available and needed.
  • Transport elementary school age children from church to various spots about town during VBS (Vacation Bible School) Needed from 9am— noon.
    Commitment: One week in June (Mon — Fri) but could be shared with other drivers.
  • Transport elementary school age children from church to various spots about town during GROW Camp. Needed from 9am — noon.
    Commitment: One week in August (Mon — Fri) but could be shared with other drivers

Plan, organize and implement activities for our new members including our New Member Orientation class. Assist with the welcoming of new members. Plan activities for new members to get connected at First. Commitment: Meets on a quarterly basis as needed.

• Be a friend to a person or family joining First Lutheran Church. Answer their questions about the congregation and its activities, in a caring, positive manner.
• Invite them to attend church-related functions with you (worship services, bible studies, education events, choir, etc). Introduce them to the other people and help familiarize them with the setting.
• Encourage them to use their spiritual gift(s) within the congregation by serving in a way that is enjoyable for them and beneficial to our faith community.
• Attend the Faith & Life @ First orientation mtg. Attend Welcoming Service with new member.
Commitment: You are welcome to sponsor as often as you wish.

• The nursery is staffed during 8:30 & 9:45am worship on Sunday morning and during other special events during the week. A paging system is available for contacting parents. Loving, caring adults and youth (age 11 and up) are encouraged to serve to ensure the safety and comfort of all who choose to use the nursery.
Commitment: one worship service approx. every 6 weeks Sept-May, and/or a special events (examples: new member orientations — 1 evening hour, Parent’s Share — 1 hour any Wed 11am-noon, Mother/Daughter/Friend banquet, etc.)

Share God’s word during the service. The readings are provided ahead of time to allow for practice.
Commitment: as available

Church or City Park, Saturday, Sunday or Wednesday worship:
• Greet people as they enter for worship, make them feel welcome & offer them bulletins
• Collect offering and clean up after worship. Count those in attendance for statistical purposes. Commitment: In the sanctuary — monthly basis and generally I month per year at City Park — at least 1 Sunday per month, more often if you wish.

• Welcome visitors and provide information about the “happenings” at First Lutheran. Collect registration forms and money for various events.
• Needed after all worship services.
• Also opportunity to serve one day during the week 9-NOON M-F.

MISSION/OUTREACH TEAM

Assist with Communion Services at Senior Housing Facilities – Contact: Val Trumm, Parish Health Nurse 320-762-2196
Communion services are offered once a month at the various senior housing facilities and our pastors could use help with logistics: set up, getting residents to the meeting room, etc.
Commitment: 1 hour, once a month, or more if you like

Send birthday cards to our senior members on behalf of the Care Team (cards are provided).
Commitment: approximately once per quarter

Christmas Store – Contact: Karen Brazel 320-763-3285
Children of our church enjoy this store that is especially for them to purchase gifts for their family members.

  • The proceeds go to help less fortunate families enjoy a merrier Christmas.
  • Donate new or gently used items OR come help a child shop, wrap presents, or be a cashier.
    Commitment: This event is one Sunday in early December

What a joyful thing to consider our land already provides ministry before we even put a building on it! Please consider sharing your time for weeding, watering, and harvesting. All produce is donated to the United Way for the food shelf.

An opportunity to share our Christian Love and Fellowship with those who communicate with people less often than most of us:

  • A ministry for men, women, young people, and families.
  •  Involves person-to-person contact. At certain times a phone call is the best way to be in touch.
  • Begins after you are assigned a person to visit and receive a packet containing helpful hints in visitation practices.
    Commitment: Visits of once a month & periodic training/fellowship opportunities

  • Volunteer to help build houses (no special skills are required, site supervision is provided)
  • Volunteer to aid in fund-raising or donate funds and/or materials.

A network of area churches that links church ministries and volunteers to people in need. Be part of their board, volunteer in their office, or offer your assistance for a particular need.

A time to be together in fellowship and to assemble various kits for Lutheran World Relief. (Layette kits, Sewing kits, School kits, Health kits, and Mid-wife kits.) Join this ambitious group when you can for part of the day or all day.
Commitment:. Meetings are every third Tuesday from 8am to noon.

Operation Bootstrap Africa (OBA) Contact: Junnell Widmark 320-762-1225
Our efforts have proven to be of tremendous value in providing classrooms for the children of Tanzania. Walk and/or pledge for this important cause.
Commitment: This event is held on a Saturday in mid-September

Be part of this important ministry on behalf of others. Receive prayer concerns through the church office and offer up prayers as requested. Available with 2 options: via telephone or e-mail. All prayer requests should be referred to the Church Office 320-762-2196 Meet quarterly.

Prayer Shawl Ministry – Contact: Lola Anderson 320-283-5741
Knit or crochet prayer shawls to be gifted to those in need.

  • The prayer shawls are prayed for and blessed; then given to people experiencing any type of illness or tragedy with the explanation that Jesus is putting His arms around them.
  •  Meets the 1st Thursday of each month at 2:30pm in the Family Room to pray as they knit/crochet.
    Commitment: come when you can.

If you are passionate about Celebrating, Remembering, & Fighting Back against cancer, consider becoming a part of this team. There are several options for being involved:

  • Be part of the team that plans fundraisers and raises awareness about ongoing activities within the congregation
  •  Assist with the main fundraiser (decided by the team each year). Examples include: help out in the kitchen, sell tickets at the door, sell luminaries, etc.
  • Decorate luminaries in honor of a cancer survivor or in memory of a person who lost their battle
  • Walk the track the night of the Relay For Life event — the 2nd Friday/Saturday in July.
    Commitment: Dependent upon the ways you want to be involved

Stephen Ministers are laypeople — Christian men and women — trained to provide one-to-one care to people experiencing a difficult time in life, such as grief, divorce, job loss or illness.
Commitment: 10 hours of training (1 hour sessions), monthly support meetings (l hour) and individual visits 2-4 times per month (2-4 hours).

Transport Others to Appointments In/Out of Town – Contact: Val Trumm, Parish Health Nurse 320-762-2196
Drive people to and from appointments either in town, or out of town, using your own vehicle.
Commitment: As needed & available

Trunk-or-Treat – Contact: Steve Heseltine, Shared Ministry Coordinator 320-762-2196
This event is an important outreach to the children of our community. Decorate your car, come in costume, hand out candy to the community children who come “trunk-or-treating” in the church parking lot. Sign up at the Welcome Center. Donate candy or funds to purchase candy.
Commitment for trunks is early evening on Halloween

Be part of the team that plans, organizes, recruits, and implements the story of Jesus’ birth.
Commitment: Meetings Sept-Nov, “Living Nativity” event is one Saturday in early December.

This committee manages the investments of the Endowment Fund and the disbursement of the interest from the Fund. Names of interested persons are submitted to the Vision Team for appointment to this committee.

This is a new board that plans & organizes the activities/events for families with young children.
Commitment: Monthly meetings; additional time for various events throughout the year

This board is responsible for the general work of the Friendly Visitor Program.

  • Recruit people to visit the home-bound
  • Offer training to visitors periodic throughout the year with the assistance of the Parish Nurse
  • Plan and organize quarterly gatherings at the various senior housing facilities
    Commitment: monthly meetings for 1 hour

  • The mission statement for this board is “to build relationships, create awareness, generate opportunities, and offer support in sharing the excitement of the Gospel of Jesus Christ locally and globally”
  • Some of their involvements include: Habitat for Humanity, Operation Bootstrap Africa, Mission trips, supporting missionaries, Church Garden, Operation Christmas Child, Feed my sheep which is a group who provide meals for larger groups of people
    Commitment: Monthly meetings; additional time for various events throughout the year

This group works to be proactive in making decisions that affect the maintenance on the church building and property.

Recruit/assign ushers, with the assistance of the Director of Shared Ministry, for the 4 worship services for a 2 month period during the year (or Lent/Christmas Eve).

  • Plan and coordinate the various lay ministries of the church.
  • Organize, train, equip, and thank the people who carry out the ministries of the church.

Make a difference in the faith life of a young person.
Commitment: Monthly from November-April of the student’s 9th grade year (usually on Wednesday evening but can be worked out for another time as needed) and Reformation Sunday in October of the student’s 10th grade year.

  • VBS (Vacation Bible School)
