** * * * * The Volunteer Ministry Board invites all servants to a celebration in your honor the weekend of April 26 and 27. Please plan to join us after the 5:30, 8:30 and 9:45 services for punch and refreshments. * * * * Yesterday as I was sitting at my desk trying to come up with an idea for an article on National Volunteer Week for inclusion in the FOCUS, I was thinking about the similarities between being a steward (volunteer) and attending worship. First of all, it's very important to “show up”. I believe it's important as a child of God to gather together with other children of God to hear the word, pray, commune, give of time, talents and money, and to fellowship. Secondly, some weeks one comes in knowing that it's not been a “good” week. Perhaps we've felt too busy to answer the call to help out or just too much sin. Maybe it's not enough service or not enough spiritual activity. Thirdly, there are those weeks whether it be in service to others, or in worship at church, one comes in knowing that it's been a “wonderful week.” Things went right…we went on a visit as a Friendly Visitor, set up for communion, filled busy bags, knit a prayer shawl, lead KICK, assisted with a Parish Health project, served a Lenten Supper, sang in the choir, or any one of a multitude of other service opportunities. Perhaps it feels that one's prayers have been answered, and one is in harmony with the spirit of God. Fourthly, there are those moments of truth, whether it be during a service opportunity, or at church, when someone says something that seems to put it all into perspective. Sometimes these insights come from doing what we are called to do, but often they come as a result of things we have left undone. There is that note of accountability. The gift of sharing helps us move from being “stuck” to getting back on track. Of course, there are other similarities too; for example, both service opportunities and worship offer fellowship and love, bear witness to the glory of God, provide meaning to life, sing praises to Jesus, and the list goes on. Throughout all of this, one constant for me has been the faithfulness of all of you. I try to remember to thank God for you everyday and I also try to read the Word of God each and every day. I find that when I am thankful and also fill up on the Word, then I'm truly satisfied. And so I say to you, as Paul wrote to the Philippians in Chapter 1:3, "I thank God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now."
